About the Mill Historic Interpretation Project

Under the auspices of the Department of Conservation & Recreation and Wachusett Greenways, The Springdale Mill Historic Site Committee is undertaking the preservation and historical interpretation of the Springdale Mill site and mill village. While channeling public access to ensure water quality, the project will open up the mill site, develop safe footpaths for viewing the remaining foundations of the mill and village, and provide signs with text and illustrations explaining the history and use of the mill. The mill project will provide a wonderful resource for our community, providing a way to honor the hard work of our forebears, explain our industrial heritage, and teach our children about the use and preservation of our human and natural resources. We anticipate that the site will be a pleasurable amenity for users of the Mass Central Rail Trail, an educational resource for our schools, and a fun and interesting destination for seniors, families, and civic and recreational groups.

The site is being developed by volunteers. Many DCR staff and Wachusett Greenways members have donated their time and services, along with dozens of other neighbors and friends of the project.

The Mill project is being supported by the Department of Conservation & Recreation,  Wachusett Greenways, The Greater Worcester Community Foundation, The Holden Historical Society, the Town of Holden, Monti Granite, Rodney Hunt Company, the people of the Wachusett region, and a grant from the Children of Charlotte and Jeremiah Kaplan.
